Why You Should Repeat The Same Exercises in The Gym

It’s not uncommon for our trainers to hear: “I did that [exercise] last time.”

Translation: I don’t want to do it again.

Do you feel like you’re wasting time if you do the same exercise twice in a row?

Let me challenge your thinking—because if you're constantly changing exercises, you might be leaving progress on the table.

There’s a key training principle at play here called progressive overload.

Progressive overload simply means making the same exercise slightly more challenging than the last time you did it.

That means:

  • Option A: Slightly increasing the weight.

  • Option B: Performing more reps with the same weight.

For the fastest results, it’s best to stick with the SAME core exercises until your strength starts to plateau. That could mean repeating exercises for 2 to 12 weeks!

Why don’t we do this at Fitness Collective?

Most people get bored out of their mind, lose motivation, and stop working out altogether.

No bueno.

That’s one of the reasons why we build variation into our programs to keep things fun and engaging.

But truth be told, most people would benefit from repeating fundamental exercises much more frequently!

Why repeat exercises?

  • You get stronger faster (your brain and nervous system adapt).

  • Your form improves.

  • You build real muscle by targeting the same area consistently.

So, the next time your trainer hands you an exercise and you think, "I did that last time..."

Good! :)

That means they are doing their job and helping you reach your goals faster.

Keep moving—even if it’s the exact same movement.
