5 Exercises Every Adult Over 40 Should Be Doing

If you’re over 40, you don’t need to do 50 different exercises to stay strong.
But there are a few movements we think deserve a permanent place in your routine.
Why?
Because they don’t just make you stronger in the gym. They help you maintain the strength to do the things you want to keep doing outside of it.
Here are 5 exercises every adult over 40 should be doing—in some form:
1. Squat
You squat every time you sit down and stand back up.
Squats strengthen your legs, hips, and core and help you maintain one of the most basic abilities we need as we age: getting yourself up and down.
And no—you don't have to put a heavy barbell on your back. A box squat, goblet squat, TRX-assisted squat, or another variation may be a much better fit depending on your injuries and current fitness level.
Fun fact: leg strength is one of the best predictors of independence in our later years!
2. Deadlift
Think of a deadlift as practicing how to safely pick something up from the floor.
It strengthens your glutes, hamstrings, back, and core—all muscles you use when picking up a grandkid, moving a box, working in the yard, or lifting a suitcase.
Deadlifting safely and correctly is one of the best ways to keep you injury-free in your life outside the gym. And deadlifting too much weight or with bad form is one of the best ways to get yourself injured.
3. Row (Pull)
Rows strengthen your back, shoulders, and arms and train a pulling motion you use constantly in everyday life.
They're also a great counterbalance to how much time most of us spend sitting, driving, and working at a computer. When we strengthen our back muscles, we tighten the muscles needed to pull us into better posture.
4. Push-Up or Chest Press (Push)
Pushing strength matters too.
Push-ups, chest presses, and their many variations strengthen your chest, shoulders, and triceps.
One of the reasons these matter most is to have the strength and stability to push yourself up from the floor.
5. Loaded Carry
This one is exactly what it sounds like: pick up something moderately heavy and carry it.
Loaded carries train your grip, core, posture, and total-body strength.
More importantly, they prepare you for real life—carrying groceries, hauling luggage, moving things around the house, and everything in between.
BONUS: Something Fast & Explosive
Strength is important. But as we age, there's another physical quality we don't want to ignore: power.
After the age of 30, we start to lose muscle every year, and fast-twitch muscle fibers are the first to go. These are the fibers you recruit when you need to move with speed and explosiveness.
And you use that ability outside the gym more than you might realize...
Catching yourself when you trip. Quickly stepping out of the way of something. Hopping over a puddle. Running across the street. Reacting when you lose your balance.
That's why, when appropriate for your body and injury history, incorporating some faster, more explosive movements into your training can be valuable.
And don't worry—we're not saying everyone over 40 needs to start doing giant box jumps.
Power and agility training can include:
Medicine ball throws or slams
Low-level hops or jumps
Quick step-ups
Agility drills
Faster versions of traditional strength exercises using an appropriate resistance
The specific exercise—and how explosive it should be—depends highly on the individual.
If you have an injury, joint limitation, balance concern, or you're new to exercise, some higher-impact movements may not be appropriate yet. There are plenty of ways to train speed and power without jumping.
The goal isn't to train like an athlete. It's to maintain your ability to move quickly when life requires it.
The important part:
There is no single version of any of these exercises that everyone over 40 should do.
Your exercise selection should account for your strength, experience, mobility, injuries, limitations, and goals.
The goal is to keep your body capable of squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, and carrying for decades to come. And catching yourself when life comes at you fast!
At Fitness Collective, that's exactly what we help our members do. Every workout is individualized so you can build strength around your body and goals.
