Four Reasons You're Not Using Your Gym Membership

Do you have a gym membership you never use?

If so, you're not alone. In fact, tons of gyms out there sell memberships knowing and even hoping that people won't show up.

Every year, thousands of adults join a gym with the best intentions. They know they need to exercise. They want to lose weight, have more energy, stay healthy as they get older, etc.

So why do so many memberships end up collecting dust?

After working with adults 40+ for over 16 years, we've found it almost always comes down to one of four reasons (or a combo of them).

1. The gym is intimidating.

Walking into a room full of 20-something's who seem to know exactly what they're doing can be overwhelming.

Before you even step foot in the gym, it's easy to convince yourself that you'll be the oldest one there, you'll be the most out of shape, you'll look stupid, or that people will judge you.

The solution: Start small. Go for just 10 minutes and start to acclimate to the environment. Slowly increase this overtime.

2. You don't know what to do.

Without a plan, the gym can feel like wandering through a maze. Which machines should you use? How much weight? How many reps? How do I even adjust the machine so it's in the right position?

And before you know it, you're headed to the treadmill again...because it's the only piece of equipment you're comfortable on.

It's frustrating, and most people eventually give up.

The solution: Use AI or a simple Google search to find a full body workout that's safe for your unique body. For example: "I am 52-years-old and I deal with chronic lower back pain. Give me a beginner-friendly full body workout I can do pain-free in 1 hour."

Save the workout to your phone for easy access when you hit the gym.

3. No accountability and no motivation.

Motivation is great...until it disappears.

Life gets busy. Work runs late. Kids or grandkids have activities. Something always seems to come up. And without accountability, it's incredibly easy to skip one workout...then another...then another.

The solution: Work out with a friend or family member! You'd be surprised at how impactful it can be to simply make a commitment to show up to another person besides just yourself. Plus, it's less scary when you're not going alone :-)

4. You're worried about getting hurt.

Maybe you've dealt with back pain, bad knees, or a shoulder that just isn't the same anymore.

The last thing you want is to make it worse when you're trying to get healthier.

The solution: Decrease the weight and focus on your form and technique. As the weight you're using goes up, your chance of injury increases significantly when you're not performing the exercise properly.

When the weight is not as heavy, it allows you to move more slowly and practice proper movement patterns. And your injury risk is much lower.

Even better solution: Hire a personal trainer! When you have a coach who knows your goals, creates a plan specifically for your body, teaches proper technique, and is waiting for you at your scheduled appointment, everything changes. It solves all four of the problems listed above!

The gym becomes less intimidating.

You know exactly what to do.

Someone is counting on you to show up.

And you can feel confident you're exercising safely.

Joey, our Founder & CEO, recently recorded a short video explaining these four roadblocks in more detail, along with some simple ways to overcome them. If any of these resonated with you, it's worth the 80-second watch.

And if you'd like to experience what it's like to remove all of these roadblocks and set yourself up for success, we'd love to invite you in for a free trial session. You can claim it here.
