Common Fitness Mistake After 40: Why The 80/20 Rule Won't Get You The Results You Want

Most of our members over 40 want to lose weight, gain strength & energy, live a higher quality life, or a combination of these.

Sometimes, people start working out and think that alone will solve their problem...that the weight will just start falling off.

They get frustrated after 5 to 10 workouts that they haven’t lost a ton of weight.

On the other side of it, they will hear something like, “it’s 80% nutrition and 20% working out.” They start to devalue working out and think they just need to focus on the kitchen.

I have been a personal trainer for almost 20 years now, and the longer I do this, the closer I think it is to 50/50.

And the older we get, the more important resistance training becomes! Here is a good way to look at it:

Nutrition will dictate your size. Working out dictates your shape and ability.

If you only focus on nutrition, you will probably lose weight, but will mostly just become a smaller version of your current shape.

Your posture probably won’t change much, you won’t be any stronger, and you will still lack the energy you are seeking. These problems can amplify as we age.

If you only focus on working out, you can gain a significant amount of strength and change your shape, but you might still want to be a smaller size.

The conclusion: You need both. It’s a 50/50 relationship.

To maximize the results you are getting in the weight room, you will have to address your nutrition at some level.

This is why we created Nutrition Collective. It’s a 12-week program to help you understand how to properly fuel your body for real life and attain the body size you want. We have one starting on August 23rd.

While there are plenty of other options out there, my encouragement is to do something that is going to help you move the needle so you are maximizing your time in the gym. You can sign up for our Nutrition Collective program at this link.

Keep moving,
